Cancer Support Groups And Information: American Cancer Society ACS provides free literature and helps patients obtain medical and financial assistance. ACS supports a 24/7 information and resource telephone number 1-800-ACS-2345 and help is available in both English and Spanish. American Cancer Society This is both a telephone and web-based service for cancer survivors, their families, caregivers and friends. It provides access to live on-line chats, virtual support groups, pre-recorded talk shows, and personal stories. Cancer Care Offers telephone education workshops and support services at no charge to people living with cancer. Cancer.Gov The most comprehensive site on the Web devoted to cancer and sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute. The free booklet series entitled, “What You Need To Know…” is available from this site. It offers an overview of cancer detection, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment for every kind of cancer listed in its exhaustive database. Catholic Charities Of Columbia And Greene Counties Healthcare Consortium Cancer Support Services Program and the Ovarian Cancer Awareness Project hosts weekly cancer support group meetings in Columbia and Greene Counties. We also have available booklets and educational information from the National Cancer Institute, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Cancer Society. Hospicelink Non-profit service that provides information on hospice care and refers cancer patients and their families to local hospice programs and publications. The local office in Catskill offers a Grief Healing Group. Lance Armstrong Foundation Focuses on cancer survivorship issues for people living with, through and beyond cancer. National Cancer Institute, Office Of Cancer Survivorship The mission of the Office of Cancer Survivorship is to enhance the quality and length of survival of all persons diagnosed with cancer, and to minimize or stabilize the adverse effects experienced during cancer. It conducts and supports research that both examines and addresses the long-term and short-term physical, psychological, social and economic effects of cancer and its treatment among pediatric and adult survivors. National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA) A grass roots organization providing advocacy, support and information for family members who are caring for chronically ill relatives. Offers a newsletter “Take Care”. Office Of Women’s Health Well Spouse Foundation (WSF) WSF is a nonprofit association of spousal caregivers. It offers support to the wives, husbands, and partners of chronically ill or disabled people. The foundation has lists of support groups nationwide and sponsors recreational respite opportunities. Camp Bravehearts at Lake Luzerne Made possible through a grant from The Northeast Pennsylvania Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, this weekend camp retreat provides women who are dealing with cancer an opportunity to share life experiences. Through exercise, arts and crafts, wellness, outdoor, educational and social activities, participants can learn new skills, increase self-esteem and confidence, and help address the risks and fears that many women face during and after treatment. In October an Adirondack weekend is offered at Double H Hole in the Woods in Lake Luzerne, NY. Campers enjoy this weekend on the grounds of the Paul Newman camp for critically ill children. Reach To Recovery A rehabilitation program for men and women who have, or have had, breast cancer. The program helps breast cancer patients meet the physical, emotional, and cosmetic needs related to their disease and its treatment. Share Ongoing support groups, including one by telephone. St. Peter’s Cancer Care Center For women who have recently experienced breast surgery.
